Black 0 Brown 1 Red 2 Orange 3 Yellow 4 Green 5 Blue 6 Violet 7 Gray 8 White 9This holds true for the first 2 color bands. The third color band is the multiplier of the first 2 bands where Black=1; Brown=10; Red=100; Orange=1,000 and so on. In other words, the third band (the multiplier) is based on the number 10 raised to the power of the color code. For example, red in the third band is 10² or 100. This third band (the multiplier) also has 2 new colors where gold = .1 and silver = .01. The 4th band is the tolerance of the resistor. It shows how precisely the resistor was manufactured. Gold = 5% , silver = 10% and no band whatsoever = 20%. Just as an example of reading a resistor, you see the grpahic at the top of this page? It is yellow (4) violet (7) orange (1,000) silver (10%). So, this means that this resistor has a value of 47 * 1,000 ohms or 47,000 ohms or 47 kilohms (sometimes just referred to as 47K) and it has a 10% tolerance. The calculator at the top of the page works in just the same way and is very easy to use. Please, give it a try.
