    Amendments to the United States Constitution The First Ten Amendments are known as The Bill of Rights and went into effect when the Constitution was ratified. 1 Freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly and petition. 2 Right to keep and bear arms. 3 No quartering of soldiers. 4 Restriction of search and seizure. 5 No double jeopardy, self-incrimination or seizure of private property. 6 Right to speedy trial, witnesses & counsel. 7 Right to Trial by jury. 8 No excessive bails, fines, or cruel and unusual punishment. 9 There are addt'l rights to which people are entitled which are not mentioned in Const. 10 States & the people have rights. YEAR RATIFIED 11 Citizens of 1 state can't sue another state. 1798 12 Electors choose Pres & VP. 1804 13 Slavery abolished. 1865 14 All US citizens cannot have their rights 1868 abridged. 15 Voting rights not barred by race, etc. 1870 16 Income tax. 1913 17 US Senators elected by popular vote. 1916 18 Alcohol prohibition. 1919 19 Women gain right to vote. 1920 20 Terms Begin - Pres & VP 1/20 Reps 1/3. 1933 21 Prohibition repealed (amendment # 18) 1933 22 2 term limit for President. 1951 23 District of Columbia Gets Pres Vote. 1961 24 Poll taxes illegal. 1964 25 Presidential succession - VP; Pres Pro 1967 Tempore of Senate; Speaker of the House. 26 Right to vote - 18 years of age. 1971 27 Rules for Congressional Pay Raises 1992
